  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp corn syrup
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch slices
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. For the caramel base, melt unsalted butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup in a small saucepan over medium heat until bubbling and thickened. Pour into the bottom of a greased baking dish.
  2. Arrange slices of French bread over the caramel base in the baking dish.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, salt, and optional cinnamon. Pour evenly over the bread slices, pressing down gently to soak.
  4. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and custardy in the center. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
